Nerve injury and resulting postoperative neurologic dysfunction (PONS) is a feared complication of peripheral nerve blockades. Some neurologic symptoms following nerve blockade are permanent and can result in profound disability.4-6

Ultrasound, objective injection pressure monitoring, and nerve stimulation are synergetic, offering the physicians information to get the clearest picture possible: “(…) these three technologies are best used in a complementary fashion, to reduce the potential for patient injury, rather than just relying on the information provided by one monitor alone. X-pattern: Enhanced visibility

The new Stimuplex Ultra 360 needles are designed with a distinctive safety X-pattern with a increased number of reflective angles that enable high reflection of ultrasound waves, ensuring good visibility of the needle under ultrasound. Due to its unique design, the X-pattern reflects ultrasound beams back to the probe even at steeper penetration angles, creating the best results for the user.

Safety code

The B. Braun Stimuplex Ultra 360 product features the safety code designed to help locate needle tip in challenging nerve block conditions. The X-pattern is strategically applied on the first 20 mm of the needle shaft to create the three segmented code “short-short-long”. This enables distinction between the needle tip and the upper needle shaft.*

*Please note that the visualization of the safety code may depend on a number of factors such as proper setting of the ultrasound unit, patient related conditions of the tissue, artifacts and proper alignment of the US probe and the needle.

We also look to embed our products into multimodal approaches such as triple monitoring for peripheral nerve blocks. This helps to avoid the negative effects of misplacement such as ineffective therapy or even long-lasting nerve damage. Following safer methodologies towards correct needle placement is vital, because ineffective therapy can lead to patient discomfort. Also, unintended intraneural injections have been shown to occur in approx. 17 % of all peripheral nerve blocks performed, even while using ultrasound guidance.1,2
