Intraatrial ECG for Catheter Tip Positioning
An ECG signal can be recorded either by skin electrodes or by an electric conductive element introduced into the atrium. A central venous catheter is perfectly suited for this purpose. If the catheter tip is advanced past the sinoatrial node into the right atrium, an abnormal P wave is produced in the intraatrial electrocardiogram.
This signal disappears as soon as the catheter is retracted back into the superior vena cava.
The intraatrial (intravascular) ECG technique can be used to confirm CVC tip position during or after CVC placement.
