Askina Calgitrol Ag+ promotes wound healing in moist wound environment8 by reducing bacterial growth, while maintaining low cytoxicity.9

All open wounds are contaminated or colonized with microorganisms; however, not all contaminated wounds become infected. The symbiotic relationship between the host and the colonizing microorganism becomes pathogenic when the host’s immune system becomes compromised by the virulence of organisms present within a wound, and wound infection occurs. Biofilms also contribute to delayed wound healing and increase the risk of wound infection.11
Local infection is used to refer to a stage of infection in which there is presence and proliferation of microorganisms within the wound that evoke a response from the host, often including a delay in wound healing. Local infection is contained within the wound and the immediate peri-wound region (less than 2cm). Local infection often presents as covert (subtle) signs and symptoms, that may not be immediately recognized as a sign of infection.
Covert (subtle) signs and symptoms of wound infection include: Hypergranulation, Bleeding, friable granulation, Epithelial bridging and pocketing in granulation tissue, Increasing exudate, Delayed wound healing beyond expectations.
As local wound infection progresses, classic cardinal (overt) signs and symptoms that are traditionally associated with local infections generally become evident: erythema, local warmth, swelling, purulent discharge, wound breakdown and enlargement, pain and increasing malodour.11
Silver has a long and intriguing history as an antimicrobial in human healthcare. Silver has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, including against resistant microorganisms, and inhibits biofilms that are highly resistant to conventional treatments.12In wound dressings silver is used in various forms.13
Clinical guidelines recommend that silver dressings are used for wounds where infection is already established or an excessive wound bioburden is delaying healing ('critical colonization' or 'pre-infection'), and that they are used for short periods before re-evaluation. Silver dressings should not be used in the absence of localized (overt or covert), spreading or systemic infection, unless there are clear indicators that the wound is at high risk of infection or re-infection.14
A recent consensus recommended utilizing a ‘2-week challenge’ to determine the efficacy of an antimicrobial (specifically silver dressings). After 2 weeks it should be determined whether the wound has improved and whether there are any continuing signs of infection.15
